Pop Can Key Chain

First of all, do you call it soda, or pop?
I grew up in Oregon, and always called it pop.  Now I live in New England, and have been forced to say soda, because if I say pop, no one knows what the heck I am talking about.  My children got the best of both worlds I guess, and call it Soda Pop.  Ha.
Anyways, I originally saw this post over at a blog called This is the Year...and immediately thought of all the dedicated soda pop drinkers in my life.  For some reason, those in my extended family are partial to Diet Coke - in a big way.  But I didn't necessarily want to make jewelry - so I decided to make keychains!

I have been hearing about this new product from Mod Podge called Dimensional Magic - and decided I would like to try it out for this project.  So far so good!

So, I drove over to the local grocery store to pick up some Diet Coke.  I ended up getting the mini cans, because they seemed to have more usable Diet Coke icons on them.  Believe it or not, they were actually more expensive!  But only by a little bit :)

Felt a little funny to come home and pour the soda pop down the drain just so I could use the container.  lol.  Pretty ironic.  Too bad I couldn't magic all the empty cans from my family members into my crafty hands.  Aw well.

Once the can was clean, I took off the top with the help of my can opener.  I think it goes without saying - but I will say it anyway - BE CAREFUL when cutting up a pop can.  The edges can be sharp!
Also, be careful not to bend or crease the can in the spots you want to use it.  It does show through, and for some people (yes me), that can be annoying.
Here is a picture of my disassembled can...
I made a variety of hearts and circles in a Word document on the computer, and and printed and cut them out.  After decided which sizes I liked best for which sections, I used the shapes to trace onto the can.  A ball point pen worked fine.  I left just enough of a line to cut by - and not so much that it ruined the can if I didn't cut exactly on the line.

Next came the dimensional magic part....and the hole punching part.  And believe it or not, this took some trial and error.  Mostly error :)  at first.  I took a tiny nail, and punched a hole in the top of my shapes.  This hole would eventually be used to hold a jump ring that I could hang from a key chain.
At first I tried to push the nail through with my fingers - but I bent the pop can - which looked horrible.
So then, I set the shapes on a cardboard box, and used a hammer to puncture the top of each shape with the nail - and no crease.  Much better!

Then,  I applied the first coat of dimensional magic, and let it dry the allotted time.  (Best to have a needle or pin handy, in case there are air bubbles in the dimensional magic when you apply it.  You will want to pop those so they don't dry onto the surface that way).
Looked good, but I wanted it to be thicker - more bubbly.  I applied 3 coats - and it looked SO GREAT!  But, my hole had filled in, so I needed to punch it again.  Good and Bad.  Some worked, but one cracked the dimensional magic and it all popped right off the pop can (see below).

So, ultimately, this is the way that worked for me:
I hammered in a hole, did just 1 coat of dimensional magic before hammering the hole again if needed, adding my jump ring, and then applied the additional 2 coats of dimensional magic.
On one I added the jump ring before applying any coats of dimensional magic, and this worked as well.
I also did one coat on the back side of the shape for aesthetics and continuity.

UPDATE: One of you clever readers suggested that, while applying the Dimensional Magic and letting it dry, you should lay in on a cookie cooling rack, so that the jump rings can go through the slats and the pop can can still lay flat.  Brilliant - thank you!

Then, I added the shapes to an old key chain that I had - and it looked so adorable!!

But when I picked it up..... it obviously swung around, and sometimes you could only see the blank tin can heart on the back.  Boo.  So, I decided to make another.

This time I cut 2 sets of each shape, and glued them together using Amazing Goop, so that you could see a logo on BOTH SIDES of the shape!  I punched a hole while the glue was wet, and then set them under a bunch of books to keep them pressed together while they dried.

The rest of the process was the same, except that this time I did 3 coats of dimensional magic on both sides of each shape.
I also included the top tab in my keychain just for fun.  The keychain came from the hardware store for a couple of bucks.  The jump rings I purchased at the craft store.

Now, I have an AWESOME key chain, which I was thinking would look adorable hanging from the handle of my mom's purse, along with a couple of other bling-y key chains she has hanging there.  Yes, she is one of those Diet Coke crazy drinkers :)

Fun, inexpensive project.  It doesn't take a whole lot of time...you just have to have patience while the dimensional magic dries.  Have fun!

  12. This is SO cool! I'm going to have to try it with Dr Pepper. First time I've heard of the Mod Podge Dimensional Magic...I need to get some! :)

I grew up saying "POP" and I'm from Oregon too. I haven't lived there in a million years, but STILL say pop and make my kids say it too. I refuse to call it "Soda". On occassion I have to say it so the people I'm with know what I'm talking about, but it feels so dirty! lol

Right in the middle, in Kansas, it's called either pop, or soda, which ever you're most comfortable. I am just soo so glad to see that there are others just as passionate about pop as I am!! AND I just love, love LOVE this project! :D

  33. I LOVE THIS!!! Would you believe that just last week I cut a Dr. Pepper can up and made a few 3D things with it...there are hearts and flowers laying out on my dining room table right now! I had to give it a try because I just knew something could be done with it, cans are so paper thin right now. I only did two things differently, I punched a hole in the side and used my scissors to take the top off...and...(not for the faint of heart) I used punches for the shapes...I know, I know...I'm just not thinking about what effect that has on the punch!

I am SO HAPPY to have run across your blog because I have been trying to figure out what to do about the sharp edges... the dimensional stuff is brilliant! THANK YOU! And adding the pull tab was so smart! Love your project, thanks for sharing.

ok... dumb question time...is the tin required to keep the dimensional mp flat? or does dimensional mp make any material sturdy and dimensional? I am thinking about anything that can be printed to cardstock is fair game!!!

    ReplyDelete
  51. Hi Cacao Cottage!
Your email is not linked to you through blogger, so I can not respond to your question through email, but I will answer here in case you see it.
I have not tried dimensional magic on cardstock, but I assume it would work great! It is a liquid glue, so there would some amount of soaking in, I assume - but I dont think that would ruin a project at all. Just like with regular mod podge, it might change the texture a bit, or might make the pattern run a little, depending on the paper.
I think it is definitely worth a try!
    Thanks!
    Lindsay

  72. Very cute! When I've made similar projects with dimensional magic (or any other resin type project) and a hold for jump ring is needed, I punch the hole, place in the jump ring then add the resin on top. But to keep the resin from running (because the jump ring makes this not lay flat) I place the item on a bakers cookie cooling rack. All the spaces allow plenty of room for the jump rings.

Just a suggestion to make the project even quicker! I love this idea and am definitely going to make some! 99. I absolutely love this....I had a great idea too..you know those penny key rings that you see on pinterest now? The ones with your marriage date etc? Use this stuff to coat them and punch a hole instead of having to try to punch a hole in the pennies...brilliant huh? lol

    ReplyDelete
  100. Or why not just put the ring in before applying the dimensional magic and just working around it that way...or leaving the nail in until after you've coated it and removing it before it settles

  101. I seriously love this idea! What a great fun way to display ones (MINE) obsession with Diet Coke!!! I found this through Pinterest, and tried one of my own. I linked your blog on mine. Thanks for sharing such a fun project!

  104. These are fantastic so simple yet so impressive, one question did you do anything to the edges of the hearts? Just thinking of the sharp edges, or does the modge podge cover them.
Thanks could i post a link on my blog page to this?

  106. Thanx for the heads-up on the Dimensional Magic!

I've been researching various jewelry projects using metal-washers (yes, the ones from a toolbox).

In doing so, I came across a similar product called Diamond Glaze.
I'm looking forward to trying it out.

    Familiar with it?

    ReplyDelete
  107. I just found this crafty gem on Pintrest. I read your article and scanned the comments and I am still left wondering about sharp edges on the cut can shapes. Does the mod podge take care of that or did you do some filing or buffing or something?

    ReplyDelete
  108. For those of you who have asked about SHARP EDGES: The answer is, no - the edges are not sharp enough to cut. On shapes like the heart, I rounded the tip just slightly, so that it wasn't too pokey. Otherwise, the edges - especially when rimmed by the dimensional magic - are not sharp on skin or anything. Thanks for your comments!

  109. Question. How do you flatten the pieces enough to glue them together? I tried supergluing them, but they wouldn't stay flat together; they kept popping back out from each other. I managed to glue them to my fingers, but not to each other.

I was excited to make one of these, but now it looks like I may have to stick with cardboard cutouts from the box instead of cutouts from the cans.

    ReplyDelete
  110. Hi Meredith,
Here's what I can say that might help:

I use e6000 or Amazing Goop glue. I don't think traditional super glue is nearly strong enough.

I have used sand paper to rough up the back of the metal, so that there are tiny grooves for the glue to adhere to better.

I press the pieces under very heavy books while they are drying.

Following these instructions, I have usually not had a problem with them popping apart. I also try to be careful about what part of the can I use. Some parts of the can have less curve, and certainly, the smaller the piece you cut out, the less curve there is to contend with when it is drying together.

    Good luck!

    1. Thanks. I don't have any special glue like that. I thought about putting something heavy on top, but I didn't want to end up gluing a piece of a can to the cover of an encyclopedia.

I think I'll still try it with cardboard. I already have some cardboard cutouts from a Coke box, from another project I did once. Sometime in the future, though, I do want to try it again with cutouts from the cans.

  111. Very nice project, too bad you were foolish to pour perfectly good pop down the drain.
I'm sure if you tried at all you could have found someone who would have drank it for

  113. I love this idea... Ive been experimenting with pop cans too. making hair flower clips with the cans and just recently making hair flower clips with the pop tabs. Another "pop" idea to add to my list. thanks!!!

  114. Love this! It has been a while now since you made it... Has it held up? Just curious! ;)

    ReplyDelete
  115. Hi Emily,
Yes, it held up pretty well. My mom put it on the outside of her purse, so eventually I think it snagged, and the jump ring opened up on a piece, so it fell off. So - it isn't indestructible :)
    Thanks, and good luck,
    Lindsay

  116. Very cute idea.

In Texas we refer to all soda as "coke". This can get confusing to outsiders. Typical party situation: "Can you gab me a coke?", "sure, what kind?", "Dr. Pepper would be great". It may be silly, but that's how it goes around here.

    ReplyDelete
  117. I'm from England and here we call fizzy drinks pop, we call soda water soda, so we ask for a glass of pop or an orange and soda (which is orange juice and soda water mixed) love the keychain and am going to try this with my boys over the weekend.

I just call it a fizzy drink lol

  119. I am an avid Coke addict. This is great for me and my friends & family. Gonna hafta stock up on the mod-poge stuff and go to town.
By the way: West Texas calls all soda pops "Coke".
    Thanks for the share.
    Kudos,

  120. Soda? Pop? Soda pop? I'm with the West Texas Hunny Kidd. Many of us in the South use the term Coke as a generic term for any soft drink. Well....Dr. Pepper drinkers say Coke for all soft drinks except Dr. Pepper. lol

  125. How does the dimensional magic hold up? Did it get scratched/cloudy looking? turn yellow? etc

    Thanks!

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Hi Ashley!
Yes, eventually the dimensional magic cracked and came off. It was probably a year or so before that happened though. The problem with pop cans is that they are smooth - so it is harder for the modpodge to adhere. Still, it is a fun project, and the more careful you are with the product, the longer it will last. If it were not getting carried on a bag, but were just hanging as a decoration, I don't see why it would ever fall off. And I don't recall it turning yellow or clouding, but again, if it were in constant sun exposure or something, yellowing might happen. Good luck!

  126. Instead of pouring that coke down the drain put it insome ice trays and freeze for the next time you want a cold coke put some of those coke ice cubes in it ...that way it doesn't get watered down when they melt..you can also use those cute tray shapes they have for making candy ...Just a thought here since SODA POP is expensive ...
